A Little Foresight and Two Simple Measurements can make Your Shed a Success

It only requires a little planning and a few simple measurements to make your new shed a complete success. Don't become one of the few who have bought garden sheds only to find their belongings won't fit inside!

While one member of the family may have some ideas about what is going into the shed, others in the household may have other claims on the storage space, and it is important to get a shed that is large enough to fit everything comfortably with room to spare. Many people buy a standard size shed without taking the time to calculate the amount of space necessary to keep all the stuff they have in mind to store in the shed.

Make a list of the stuff you intend to store inside and invite the others to contribute. You will probably be surprised at how fast the shed will fill up, if you can imagine the amount of room required to lay everything out side by side. If the shed is too small to accommodate everything with room to spare it can become a nuisance to access the items in the shed when you want them. Who wants to have to take out stuff and move everything around just to reach the things you want. If you need the shed to store anything extra long then take the time to work out if it will go into the shed easily and with enough spare room to move it to the side for storage. It is important that there is enough clear space for you to get in and move things around, even when it is relatively full of all the other stuff.

Extra large bulky items can also cause problems simply because of the difficulty in getting then in through the door. Standard size shed door opening are not particularly wide. Imagine how frustrating it is to have to lift and rotate things to try to manoeuvre them inside, not to mention the squashed fingers that can result. With a little foresight and a tape measure this can be completely avoided. If you find the standard door width is too narrow for what you have in mind, then contact your shed supplier. Most reputable garden sheds suppliers will have an option to request an extra wide door, saving you a lot of hassle in the long run.
